What are Medina County Public Records?

The Ohio Open Records Law defines Medina County public records as documents and records in the custody of any public office, including state, county, city, village, township, and school district units. Not all records are open to public access in Medina. The following records are not considered public records:

Medina County Crime Statistics

As reported by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), Medina County experienced a total of 11 violent crimes and 166 property crimes in 2019. The violent crimes included four cases of murder and seven aggravated assaults, while the property crimes comprised 98 burglaries, 64 larcenies, and four motor-vehicle thefts. When compared to the crime report of the previous year, this represents a 120% increase in the county’s violent crimes, as well as a 93% rise in its property crimes. In detail, rape incidences rose by 400%, aggravated assault by 75%, burglary by 326%, larceny by two percent, and motor-vehicle thefts by 400%. At the same time, rape reduced by 100%, while the murder and arson rates remained the same.

Are Medina County Criminal Records Public?

In consonance with Ohio law, Medina County criminal records are not public records. State law restricts access to Medina criminal records and information pertaining to these records. Medina criminal records consist of information about the criminal history of persons within the county’s jurisdiction, including details of the record owner, arrest records, date of conviction, probation record, and incarceration information.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s primary law enforcement agency, tasked with the duty of providing a variety of security-related services to residents, including background checks. The Sheriff’s Office acts as an intermediary between the requester and the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), which maintains a central repository of criminal history information for the state and conducts background checks as part of the process of hiring or to obtain licensure.

Individuals, prospective employers, and licensing agencies may request criminal history information and fingerprint-based background checks from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation through the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. This can be done by scheduling an appointment online on the Sheriff’s Office’s Fingerprinting Scheduling Page. On the scheduled date, the subject of the check must visit the office in person and will be required to present any valid ID issued by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and a cheque or money order payment of $27. Within two business days, the requesting party will receive the results of their request via mail. The requester must be at least eighteen years of age, and an Ohio resident for at least five years.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office maintains all public sex offender information on the County’s Public access eSORN Registry. In compliance with state law, the registry contains information regarding all offenders living within county limits, including their internet identifiers such as email addresses and social media handles. Interested persons may search the registry by the offender’s name, location, zip code, or proximity to specific addresses. Residents may also opt to subscribe to the Email Alert Feature, which provides email notifications to residents about a sex offender’s location or compliance status in specific vicinities.

Court Records

The Medina County court system consists of Courts of Common Pleas, Municipal Courts, and Mayor’s Courts.
