What are Erie County Public Records?

Erie county public records are documents that contain information about the activities of public officials carrying out official duties. Records like, criminal records, civil court records, vital records, and all other records kept by any public official are regarded as public records.

Sequel to the law concerning such records, all residents of the county have unlimited access to the records. However, there are some exemptions that deny residents access to some records. Some exemptions may be based on a court order that sealed the record. Other exemptions may be based on the statutory limitations which state that the following records are not public records:

  • Medical records
  • Probation and parole records
  • Adoption records
  • Records of an ongoing investigation
  • Records of an ongoing trial
  • Juvenile records
  • Intellectual property records
  • Donor profile records
  • Personal information of a public worker
  • Records of persons under 18
  • Records that are prohibited by state or federal law
  • Protected health information etc.

In addition to government agencies, some public records may also be accessible from third-party websites. These non-government platforms come with intuitive tools that allow for expansive searches. Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. However, users will need to provide enough information to assist with the search, such as:

  • The name of the subject involved in the record (subject must be older than 18 or not juvenile)
  • The address of the requestor
  • A case number or file number (if known)
  • The location of the document or person involved
  • The last known or current address of the registrant

Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
